WHAT IS THE IELTS VOCABULARY BUNDLE?
The IELTS Vocabulary Bundle is a complete set of Anki flashcard decks designed to systematically build the English vocabulary you need to score higher in IELTS — from the foundational words tested at Bands 1–4 all the way to the academic language that separates Band 6 from Band 7 and above.
Based on research from linguists Michael Lewis, James Milton, Stephen Krashen, Paul Nation, and Averil Coxhead, the IELTS Vocabulary Bundle takes you from 90% English comprehension at the lower band levels through to the precise academic register assessed in IELTS Writing and Speaking at Bands 7–9.
Receive a discount by buying all 3 flashcard decks together. The bundle includes the Essential Vocabulary (Bands 1–4), Advanced Vocabulary (Bands 5–8), and Academic Vocabulary (University & Professional) decks.
WHAT VOCABULARY DO I NEED FOR IELTS — AND WHY?
Vocabulary is one of the most important factors in your IELTS band score across all four skills. In IELTS Reading and Listening, your vocabulary range directly determines how much of the text or recording you can understand. In IELTS Writing and Speaking, your Lexical Resource band descriptor — worth 25% of your score in each — is assessed on the range, accuracy, and appropriacy of the vocabulary you use.
But with hundreds of thousands of words in the English language, knowing where to start is overwhelming. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary lists at least 476,000 English words — you could never learn them all, and most of them would never appear in an IELTS exam. The solution is word frequency.
“Word frequency” refers to how often a given word appears in real English usage across speech, books, and media. Paul Nation, a world-renowned vocabulary researcher from Victoria University of Wellington, demonstrates that learning the 2000 most frequently used words gives you approximately 90% comprehension of any English text — the foundation of IELTS Reading and Listening performance at the lower band levels. From there, each additional tier of vocabulary progressively closes the gap toward the near-native comprehension required at Band 7 and above.
The IELTS Vocabulary Bundle is structured around this research. Each of the three decks targets a specific vocabulary range and IELTS band level, building directly on the one before it.
| Number of Words (by Frequency) | Comprehension Level | Approx. IELTS Band |
| 1,000 words | ~75% comprehension of any text | Bands 1–3 |
| 2,000 words | ~90% comprehension of any text | Bands 3–4 |
| 2,001–5,000 words | ~95% comprehension of any text | Bands 5–8 |
HOW DOES THE IELTS VOCABULARY BUNDLE WORK?
The bundle breaks your IELTS vocabulary learning into 3 progressive stages, each targeting a specific band range. You complete them in order — each deck’s example sentences and context are built on the vocabulary from the previous one, making learning faster and more efficient at every stage.
Stage 1: Essential Vocabulary (Bands 1–4) — The Top 2000 Words
The first stage is to master the 2000 most frequently used words in English — the vocabulary foundation that gives you approximately 90% comprehension of any English text, and broadly aligns with IELTS Bands 3–4 and the A2 CEFR level, according to research by James Milton from Swansea University.
Every word is learned in the context of a real English sentence and a monolingual English definition — no reliance on translations. This trains you to think directly in English, which is exactly what the IELTS Reading and Listening tests require. Each flashcard also includes native audio and IPA so you learn the correct pronunciation for every word from day one, supporting your IELTS Speaking score at the same time.
This approach is grounded in Stephen Krashen’s “input hypothesis” — that learners acquire language fastest when they encounter it in context that is just slightly beyond their current level — and Michael Lewis’s “lexical chunks” research, which shows that words must be learned in sentence context, not in isolation, to be truly usable.

Stage 2: Advanced Vocabulary (Bands 5–8) — Words 2001–5000

The second stage covers words ranked 2001–5000 by frequency — the vocabulary range that takes you from Band 4–5 performance toward Band 7 and above. Mastering these 3000 words pushes your comprehension toward 98% of written English, which means IELTS Reading passages stop feeling like obstacle courses and start feeling manageable.
Lexical Resource is one of the four IELTS Writing and Speaking band descriptors. To score Band 6 and above, examiners need to see a range of vocabulary used accurately and flexibly. Words 2001–5000 are precisely the words that signal lexical range — common enough to use naturally, uncommon enough to demonstrate breadth. Every flashcard presents the target word in a real sentence constructed entirely from the top 5000 words, so your learning builds cleanly on Stage 1.
Stage 3: Academic Vocabulary (University & Professional) — Words, Phrases & Academic Register
The third and final stage targets the vocabulary and phrase patterns of formal academic English — the register that IELTS examiners assess at the highest band levels. This deck contains 43 high-frequency academic words that fall outside the top 5000 general frequency words (such as subjective, rationale, and adaptive), plus 272 essential academic phrases organized by rhetorical function.
The phrases cover every major move in IELTS Academic Writing — comparing and contrasting (“similar to”, “on the other hand”), hedging (“to some extent”, “it could be argued that”), structuring (“in addition to”, “as a consequence of”), specifying (“in terms of”, “with respect to”), and more. Two of the four IELTS Writing band descriptors — Lexical Resource and Coherence and Cohesion — are directly improved by this deck.
This deck was built using Speakada’s own research and curation, drawing inspiration from Paul Nation’s frequency research, Averil Coxhead’s Academic Word List from Victoria University of Wellington, and the Oxford Phrasal Academic Lexicon — then extending and refining them specifically for IELTS preparation.
